Book Exhibition “Avant-Garde: Images, Sounds and Texts”

We invite you to the book exhibition “Avant-garde: Images, Sounds and Texts” on the third floor of the library to commemorate the year of Jonas Mekas. 2022 is declared the Year of Jonas Mekas, marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the avant-garde filmmaker and film critic, writer and poet.

The godfather of avant-garde cinema, a friend of New York legend, Yoko Ono, John Lennon, Andy Warhol, Allen Ginsberg, Jonas Mekas (1922-2019), who lived in New York and was awarded the National Culture and Art Prize in Lithuania, is called one of the most outstanding artists of the 20th century. After buying the first Bolex film camera in America many years ago, he started filming images from the lives of Lithuanian emigrants, later diveded into avant-garde cinema, organized film festivals, wrote critical articles about cinema, and compiled one of the world’s largest American avant-garde film archives “Anthology Film Archives” in New York.
